Duppy Detective Tashia Has Launched!

It has taken about three years but “Duppy Detective Tashia” has finally been released on Steam. I want to thank Glen Henry of Spritewrench for the opportunity to score this game. It’s our fourth shipped game. Thank you for believing in my work , presenting something different and challenging and representing our culture.

“Duppy Detective Tashia” is a point-and-click puzzle adventure game developed by Spritewrench. Players will make sense of a murder case on a grand adventure based on Caribbean folklore. This narrative approach has not existed before therefore, the score has not been crafted until now.

When inditing this game, I was tasked to score the trailer first. Then, the world map which became part of the game design/pathways. I wanted to connect with an instrument that represented the culture and bridged / conflated two genres. My Bass Guitar purchase laid the foundation and pioneered a new game music genre titled, “Caribbean Noir”.

Creating this sound was by accident. My goal was to achieve the cultural Caribbean sound first and foremost. Then, I needed to blend the Noir sound into that.
Thankfully,  people are enjoying what we created. It’s been the most successful game we have shipped to-date.

For Duppy Detective, his brief was to “deliver a score that felt cinematic, noir-inspired, distinctly Caribbean, and unsettling at once.” Bethea has christened the result (available on Bandcamp) “Caribbean Noir.” The mixture of African and new-world elements—djembe and aslatua shakers, electric bass, and xylophone—suits both the setting and the gameplay, though I wish the main gameplay music looped seamlessly. ”
