Chase Bethea Returns to Guest Speak at Game Devs of Color 2026
September 23, 2026I am honoured and elated to be guest speaker. My talk “Mystery in the Mix – Enter Caribbean Noir” will be featured.
Attendees will discover how I indited the music of the point and click mystery adventure based on Caribbean Folklore, “Duppy Detective Tashia,” developed by Spritewrench Studios.
This talk explores how a new musical identity, Caribbean Noir, is created from the ground up to differentiate the game, using Duppy Detective Tashia, the session reveals how music is not treated as an afterthought, but as a foundational design pillar that shapes narrative, tone, and player experience from the earliest stages.
With an unconventional starting point of a cinematic trailer, where loose creative direction “cinematic, mysterious, spooky, but Caribbean” is translated into a cohesive sonic identity. Attendees are guided through how this early musical foundation establishes rhythm, tone, and emotional intent, ultimately becoming the backbone for the full game score. This choice not only shaped the sonic identity of the game, but also contributed to what is described as an emerging “Caribbean Noir” genre blending regional West Indies rhythms with cinematic suspense. The talk highlights how anchoring music early allows developers to build a recognizable brand language that stands out in an oversaturated market.
A key moment in the session focuses on the creation of authenticity through experimentation, including the decision to purchase and perform on bass with no formal training to capture a genuine Caribbean feel. This hands-on, exploratory process demonstrates how innovation often comes from stepping outside of traditional workflows, resulting in a distinct sound that cannot be replicated through stock or virtual tools.
The talk also addresses real-world development challenges, including production pauses, soul creative blocks, and the process of re-entering a project after time away. Through candid insights, attendees see how mental preparation, external inspiration, and audience feedback reignite creativity and accelerate production momentum. In addition, the rapid turnaround of new compositions after a two-year creative block illustrates the power of alignment between vision, emotion, and execution.
Finally, the session emphasizes music’s role as a narrative force that operates alongside visuals, shaping emotional interpretation and player immersion. By positioning music as part of the player’s “life soundtrack,” the talk reframes game music as a long-term engagement tool that fosters connection, retention, and memorability. Attendees leave with a deeper understanding of how intentional, early-stage music design can transform a game from a product into an experience that resonates beyond play.
With the Duppy Detective Tashia Original Soundtrack received an 8.3 critique on Music Connection Magazine (the highest out of all the music critiques in this issue), this proves the strength the of the music and how it amplifies the narrative of this game.
In addition, Jamaicans.com acknowledge the new game music genre that I pioneered.
