Chase Bethea Featured in Deadline Hollywood Discussing the New Video Game Music Genre “Caribbean Noir”

June 11, 2026

Deadline Hollywood featured me on their website.

Media coverage of video game composers that are a minority in the video game field are far and few.

In 2020, there were asks of where are the “black composers?” Apparently they were hard to find. When I decided to work in games, I knew I was a minority but I did not want people to see me for my colour but my quality of work. But when someone has to ask “where are the black composers?” it showed me that we were not as visible as we should be.  I knew who they were. Thankfully, I read about them in the books, (Darryl Duncan and Mike Brassel). I aimed to to change this by having as much publication out there as possible.

Since this setting this goal, I have had other minorities of African and Caribbean descent reach out and show love to me because they were able to identify to someone actually working in the field.

Deadline Hollywood Article Chase Bethea Duppy Detective Tashia

So, to have a complete feature about my work on the video game, Duppy Detective Tashia was a nice surprise. I was fortunate that Destiny Jackson took interest to interviewing me and getting it published. Journalists serve as bridges between creators and audiences. They aid in telling stories that might otherwise go unnoticed and provide visibility to projects that deserve attention.

To have the piece not just be about me but to highlight Caribbean game development is another gap that has been shortened in this article. There are not a lot of Jamaican developers or Caribbean developers for that matter that get featured and the visibility they deserve. With a Barbados heritage background, this piece strengthens the bridge for more people to become cognizant of the work that is created from the West Indies.

My role as a video game composer is to customize and design the emotional and cultural identity of the game through music. Musically I hope that listeners take away the feeling it gives them for whatever emotions they have to heal themselves with.

I am super grateful for the feature as it is one of the of the biggest that I have received.
